  1. 1880-1966. German-born Abstract Expressionist
  2. painter, active in Paris and Munich from 1915
  3. until 1932, when he moved to the USA. In
  4. addition to bold brushwork (he experimented
  5. with dribbling and dripping painting
  6. techniques in the 1940s) he used strong
  7. expressive colours. In the 1960s he moved
  8. towards a hard-edged abstract style. He
  9. opened two art schools, in New York City and
  10. Provincetown, Massachusetts, and was
  11. influential among New York artists in the
  12. 1930s.
